Getting a note from your child’s teacher requesting a conference is pretty much the equivalent of getting called to the office when you were a kid, right? Anxiously, you await the specified date and time, cautiously walk into the classroom, sit down at a student desk with sweat on your brow and then hear the teacher say, “I think your child has ADHD.”
Not to panic. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a very common diagnosis. All too often, the first response is to hand out medication. Although in some cases that may be necessary, research has also found that some ADHD behaviors can be managed through child therapy services.
Behavioral Therapy Services for Kids with ADHD
When seeking psychological treatment for ADHD, behavioral therapy is one of the most effective therapy approaches. Unlike other forms of therapy treatment that work to get to the root of the problem or decipher emotions, behavioral therapy is action-based. It teaches your child how to replace negative thoughts or actions with positive behaviors. For parents, positive reinforcement, consistency in if/then consequences, or time out for younger children are part of behavioral therapy you can implement at home. At school, hand signals that only the teacher and your child understand could be implemented. Accommodations such as desk placement or extended time for quiz/test-taking, or modified assignments are also helpful ways to promote educational success for your child.
