Not All Counselors in Michigan Offer Child and Adolescent Therapy

Jan 26, 2022 | Adult Counseling, Family Counseling

If you are seeking child or adolescent therapy, don’t just search for counselors in Michigan. Not all counselors have the experience or specialized training to work with children. You need to be sure that whomever you choose is the right fit for your child.

Finding the Right Therapist for Your Child

The first step in choosing the right therapist for your child is understanding why you are seeking a counselor. Is your child having behavioral issues or trouble in school? Are they having a difficult time adjusting after a recent move or transferring to a new school? Do you think there is a possibility they may need medication? These are all important questions because not all counselors treat the same, and only counselors with a medical degree can prescribe medication.

Research, Research, Research

Your child is your pride and joy. You would do anything for them. When it comes to mental health, it’s time to be more protective than ever. You don’t want just anyone getting into your child’s impressionable mind and planting seeds of anything other than positivity and truth that can help them become a better, healthier person. Read online reviews. Ask around and get recommendations. See if anyone you know has had experience with them and what they think. Personal references are the best source of information. Research the provider’s credentials, education, work history, and if there have been any complaints filed against them.

Last But Not Least

Check with your insurance company to see who their in-network providers are. If you find a counselor you’d like to try that is out of network, be sure to know what the co-pay will be or if your insurance would even cover someone out of network. If you don’t have insurance, ask the counseling offices if they have a sliding scale fee or discounts for cash-paying clients.
