What is a Psychological Assessment?

Psychological Assessment (also called Psychological Testing) evaluates symptoms, functions, and underlying differences in the brain and how they play out in the real world. Assessments utilize evidence-based psychological measures backed by decades of research to collect and analyze psychological traits accurately.

Psychological Assessments usually involve meeting one-on-one with a psychologist to complete a series of tasks and answer questions about your life (or the life of your child or loved one). Many assessment tasks are simple and similar to school activities (e.g., vocabulary tests), while others may be more complex and challenging.

Some assessments are brief and may only take an hour or two, while others are much more comprehensive and can take several hours to complete. Depending on your schedule and the amount of testing, the assessment may occur in one meeting or are spread over multiple sessions.

After testing, a psychologist will write a report detailing the results and what they mean. This report provides you (and the court, when applicable) with information found through the assessment. Privately requested assessments will then include a feedback session where you and the psychologist review the results together and discuss their recommendations. Court-ordered assessments may not involve this feedback session, and the process may differ depending on the circumstances.

Who Can Provide A Psychological Assessment?

Psychological Assessments can only be provided by licensed psychologists and licensed professional counselors. Technicians or other mental health professionals may administer some measures, but only a psychologist or LPC is qualified to interpret and make conclusions based on the findings from an assessment. WMPS’s assessment psychologists and counselors are trained to help you find the answers you deserve through evidence-based psychological testing.

How Can Assessments Help?

Psychological Assessments can assess for a wide range of emotional, social, and behavioral issues. Here at WMPS, these evaluation include:

  • Emotional Functioning
  • Personality Traits
  • Attention and Executive Functioning
  • Intellectual Abilities
  • Learning Capacity
  • Social Wellbeing
  • Risks and Safety Concerns

Based on the comprehensive assessment results, psychologists can offer recommendations for treatment and answer your questions. Some examples of this include coping skills for issues with cognitive processing speed, referral for psychotherapy or couples counseling, or support that might be important in school or work.
